New York – The New York Attorney General’s office has issued a consumer alert detailing how eligible consumers can receive restitution from Google’s $700 million settlement. Secured by AG Letitia James and 53 other state attorneys general, the settlement stems from allegations that Google suppressed competition and unjustly raised prices on Android devices.
In what is being called a landmark victory for consumer rights, Google was accused of utilizing its monopoly to charge excessive fees for app purchases and in-app transactions. The AG’s office noted that consumers who made purchases on the Google Play Store between August 2016 and September 2023 may be entitled to receive funds.
With $630 million already paid into the settlement fund, affected consumers are being notified of the claims process. Most individuals will not need to take any action; payments will be distributed automatically via PayPal or Venmo using their associated email addresses or phone numbers.
However, a supplemental claims process is in place for those without existing accounts or access to their Google Play account details. Consumers have until February 19, 2026, to request exclusion from the settlement fund if they wish to pursue individual action against Google, or file an objection to the settlement itself.
Attorney General James emphasized the importance of affected consumers staying informed about the claims process and adhering to the court-mandated deadlines. The court is scheduled to hold a hearing on April 30, 2026, to consider approval of the settlement.
This historic decision underscores the AG’s office commitment to holding big tech accountable for their impact on consumer welfare and market competition.
