Waterloo, Iowa – Julian Reyes Ferrer-Hernandez, a 27-year-old illegal alien from El Salvador, has been sentenced to more than thirteen months in federal prison for his fraudulent use of identity documents and false claim of United States citizenship.
Ferrer-Hernandez was found guilty on April 2, 2013, by a jury in Iowa of unauthorized use of a Social Security number, unlawful use and possession of fake ID cards, making false claims on an Immigration I-9 form, falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen, and making false statements during an immigration interview.
The trial evidence revealed that Ferrer-Hernandez was arrested in Waterloo, Iowa, in 2012 for public intoxication, at which time he presented six different identity cards, including counterfeit social security and permanent resident cards. He worked in Iowa from May 2008 to February 2012 under false pretenses.
During an interview with Homeland Security on April 16, 2012, Ferrer-Hernandez first claimed to be born in El Salvador, then falsely stated he was a U.S. citizen born in Texas. He also lied about his employment history.
Sentenced by Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids, Ferrer-Hernandez faces a 407-day prison term and a three-year supervised release period after his release. No parole is available in the federal system.
He is currently being held pending deportation proceedings. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by Waterloo Police, Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
