Heroin & Meth Haul Lands Arizona Couple in Idaho Lockup

BOISE, ID – A Phoenix, Arizona couple is facing a lengthy stretch behind bars after a high-speed chase and a hefty drug bust in Twin Falls, Idaho. Jess Ramirez-Orta, 27, received an eight-year federal sentence today for possession with intent to distribute heroin and methamphetamine. His girlfriend and co-defendant, Marina Morales, 24, will serve three years for the same charges, announced U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson.

The pair were caught red-handed when a Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Deputy clocked their rental vehicle speeding at 87 miles per hour in a 60 mph zone. The stop quickly revealed more than just a lead foot; neither Ramirez-Orta nor Morales possessed valid driver’s licenses. A subsequent search of the vehicle’s trunk uncovered a significant quantity of narcotics: 5.3 pounds of heroin and 4.2 pounds of methamphetamine, destined for the streets of Seattle, Washington.

Federal authorities seized $150,000 in cash, determined to be proceeds from the illicit operation, as part of the sentencing. U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge ordered Ramirez-Orta to serve an additional five years of supervised release following his prison term, while Morales faces three years of supervision after her release. The bust highlights the continued flow of narcotics through Idaho, despite efforts to stem the tide.

Court documents reveal the couple had agreed to transport the massive drug load from their home base in Phoenix to Seattle. Ramirez-Orta’s criminal history further complicated matters. He was already on felony probation at the time of the Idaho arrest, with prior convictions for Burglary and Felony Assault. Morales, thankfully, had no prior felony convictions, a detail that likely influenced her lighter sentence.

The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), underscores the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling drug trafficking. Sources within the DEA suggest this seizure is just the tip of the iceberg, pointing to a larger network funneling narcotics through the Pacific Northwest.

With Ramirez-Orta and Morales now incarcerated, authorities are focusing on dismantling the remaining elements of the drug operation. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and bring you updates as they develop. This bust serves as a stark reminder: transporting large quantities of illegal drugs across state lines carries severe consequences, and law enforcement is actively working to intercept these shipments.
