Miami-Dade Felon Floyd Convicted for Gun Possession

Brownsville, FL – In a gritty turn of events, Contrell Leo Floyd, a/k/a “Kevin Wells,” 34, was convicted by a Miami-Dade jury for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case marked the culmination of a two-day trial before U.S. District Judge Federico A. Moreno.

The incident began on October 20, 2014, when Floyd, while standing in front of Brownsville middle school, drew a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at police officers. Floyd attempted to flee, but was quickly apprehended by the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) after a brief pursuit. A loaded handgun was recovered from a public park.

Floyd’s criminal history includes previous convictions for state felony crimes, including armed robbery with a firearm. The defendant now faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison as an armed career criminal.

U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer, along with Special Agent in Charge Hugo J. Barrera of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Miami Field Division, and MDPD Director J.D. Patterson, announced Floyd’s conviction. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Abraham and Vanessa Snyder are handling the prosecution.

Floyd is scheduled to be sentenced on May 11, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. Mr. Ferrer commended the investigative efforts of ATF and MDPD, highlighting their dedication to public safety.
