SIOUX FALLS, SD – Robert Wolfe Jr., 45, of Sisseton, South Dakota, is headed to federal prison after a judge handed down a sentence of two years and six months for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
According to court records, Roberts County Sheriff’s deputies raided Wolfe’s home in April 2024 and turned up a Remington bolt-action rifle. The problem? Wolfe already had a felony conviction – for possessing a controlled substance back in 2014 – which made owning a gun illegal.
Wolfe pleaded guilty in November 2026, and Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange ordered him to forfeit the rifle and pay a $100 penalty to a fund for crime victims. He was immediately taken into custody by U.S. Marshals.
The bust was a joint effort by the Roberts County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce led the prosecution.
Federal officials say the case is part of “Operation Take Back America,” a broad initiative targeting cartels and violent crime. Though details connecting this case specifically to larger transnational organizations remain sparse, the DOJ is framing it as part of a wider crackdown on gun violence.
