A Sisseton, South Dakota man is trading the wide-open plains for a federal prison cell after the feds caught him illegally possessing a rifle. Robert Wolfe Jr., 45, was sentenced to two and a half years behind bars this week, the culmination of a raid and investigation that began nearly two years ago.
It started back in April 2024 when Roberts County deputies, acting on a tip or ongoing investigation details of which remain sealed, executed a search warrant at Wolfe’s residence. They didn’t find drugs, cash, or evidence of a larger conspiracy – just a Remington bolt-action rifle. But for Wolfe, that single firearm was enough to send him back to the system. A 2014 conviction for possessing a controlled substance permanently stripped him of the right to own any firearms, a restriction he clearly ignored.
Wolfe pleaded guilty in November 2025 to the single charge of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. While seemingly straightforward, these cases carry significant weight. Federal sentencing guidelines for this offense, considering Wolfe’s prior record, likely placed him in a range of 24-30 months. Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange landed squarely within that, handing down the 30-month sentence on March 13, 2026. It’s a harsh reminder that even possession, without intent to distribute or use in another crime, can land a felon in prison.
The courtroom wasn’t a scene of dramatic testimony or legal wrangling. Wolfe’s guilty plea streamlined the process. He offered no public statement, and his defense attorney, if any, has remained silent. Following the sentencing, U.S. Marshals immediately took Wolfe into custody, ending his freedom and beginning his journey to a yet-to-be-determined federal correctional facility. Beyond the prison time, Wolfe will face three years of supervised release upon his eventual return to society, and the Remington rifle itself is now forfeit to the government.
This wasn’t a solo operation. The bust was a coordinated effort involving the Roberts County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the FBI. The ATF, specifically, brought their expertise in firearms tracing and regulations to the table, while the FBI likely provided resources for investigative support. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce led the prosecution, building the case and securing the conviction. The collaboration highlights the increasing trend of federal and local agencies working together on firearms-related offenses.
Federal officials are attempting to tie this case, however tenuously, to “Operation Take Back America,” a broad-stroke initiative framed as a response to border security and transnational crime. The operation, predictably, also emphasizes cracking down on illegal immigration. Critics call it a political branding exercise, leveraging local cases to bolster a national narrative. Resources are being pulled from established task forces like the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), suggesting a shift in priorities or, more cynically, a re-packaging of existing efforts. While Wolfe’s case may not involve cartels or border crossings, the feds are using it to claim a win in their larger “Take Back America” campaign.
Wolfe will also be required to pay a $100 penalty to the federal Crime Victims Fund, a small restitution for the harm caused by his actions. It’s a pittance compared to the cost of incarceration, but a symbolic gesture nonetheless. The case serves as a warning: in the current climate, possessing an illegal firearm – regardless of intent – will draw the full force of federal law enforcement.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Similar cases are popping up across the country, as the feds prioritize prosecuting individuals with prior felony convictions found in possession of firearms. The message is clear: stay clean, or face the consequences.
