Daniel Andrew Mills, Unlawful Possession of Firearms, Idaho 2016

Daniel Andrew Mills, 41, of Jerome, Idaho, is headed for a federal cell after being convicted today by a jury in Boise on charges of unlawful possession of firearms. The verdict caps a violent, high-speed chase and hours-long armed standoff that terrorized a quiet rural neighborhood in the dead of night.

On January 11, 2016, just after 2:15 a.m., a Jerome County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull Mills over for a broken taillight. What followed was a reckless flight through darkened backroads at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Mills lost control and crashed through a fence, slamming into a parked vehicle. Trapped but defiant, he refused to surrender — instead, he stuck the barrel of a loaded shotgun out the driver’s window and dared officers to come closer.

The standoff dragged on for hours, with law enforcement locked down and Mills barricaded inside the wrecked car. At no point did he comply. It took the calm intervention of a Twin Falls County hostage negotiator to finally coax him out. When he did, deputies found a loaded shotgun and a loaded .25 caliber pistol inside the vehicle — both illegally possessed by Mills, a convicted felon.

Mills wasn’t just a fugitive — he was a man with a rap sheet that reads like a criminal playbook. At the time of his arrest, he was on supervised release stemming from a prior federal conviction for unlawful firearm possession. Previous convictions include assault with intent to commit a serious felony, aiding and abetting delivery of controlled substances, escape, forgery, and drug possession.

“I want to thank all the law enforcement officers involved for their efforts and willingness to put themselves in harm’s way in order to bring Mr. Mills to justice,” said U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson. “Their restraint and professionalism in peacefully resolving this armed stand-off is but one example of Idaho law enforcement protecting the community as a whole, to include individuals like Mr. Mills who seek to do them harm.”

Mills now faces up to ten years in federal prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for January 12, 2017, at 9:30 a.m. before Senior U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge in Boise. The case was jointly investigated by the Jerome County Sheriff’s Office, Jerome City Police Department, Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
