Lorne Michael Thunder Horse Indicted for Child Sexual Contact

A 34-year-old Manderson, South Dakota man has been federally indicted on charges of abusive sexual contact involving a young child. Lorne Michael Thunder Horse was named in a grand jury indictment returned on January 24, 2017, marking a grim escalation in a case that has shaken the remote Oglala Lakota County community.

Thunder Horse appeared in federal court on January 31, 2017, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann. He entered a plea of not guilty to the charge. Despite the plea, the allegations paint a harrowing picture: the indictment accuses Thunder Horse of engaging in sexual contact with a child too young to comprehend the nature of the act.

If convicted, Thunder Horse faces any term of years up to life imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and mandatory supervised release for any term of years or for life. A $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund will be imposed, and restitution may also be ordered by the court.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, underscoring the severity and federal jurisdiction of the crime. No additional suspects have been named, and authorities have not released specifics about the victim or the circumstances surrounding the abuse, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Patterson is prosecuting the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Thunder Horse remains in custody pending trial. No trial date has been scheduled as of this report, though pre-trial motions are expected to move quickly under federal guidelines.

The charge is presumed innocent until proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Still, the indictment sends a clear message: federal authorities are watching—and acting—on violent crimes against children in Indian Country. The case remains active and under intense scrutiny.
