Daniel Joseph Salgat Sentenced to 30 Years for Child Pornography

Daniel Joseph Salgat, 39, of Bay City, Michigan, a former Army soldier stationed at Fort Eustis, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for the production of child pornography — a grim fall from military service to federal inmate.

The sentence, handed down today in Newport News, Virginia, by U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen, includes a lifetime of supervised release and an order for Salgat to pay $1,202.58 in restitution to a victim of his crimes. The punishment caps a disturbing case rooted in deception, coercion, and digital predation.

Salgat pleaded guilty on July 14, 2016, admitting to posing online as a teenage girl to manipulate and lure underage females into sending explicit images and videos. Once he gained their trust, he escalated to blackmail and threats, forcing children to produce more graphic material under fear of exposure.

The arrest came after law enforcement uncovered Salgat’s attempt to persuade a 10-year-old girl — whom he met online — to leave her home and perform oral sex on him. That investigation peeled back a digital trail of manipulation, exposing Salgat’s calculated campaign of exploitation across multiple victims.

Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Martin Culbreth, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Norfolk Field Office, announced the sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa R. McKeel prosecuted the case, underscoring the federal commitment to dismantling online child exploitation networks.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative led by the Justice Department to combat child sexual abuse and exploitation. Federal, state, and local agencies collaborate under the program to identify predators, rescue victims, and secure convictions. Court documents are available via PACER under Case No. 4:15-cr-95.
