Belgrade, MT – A 20-year-old man walked free from federal court in Montana only to be immediately snatched up by the Border Patrol. Juan Diego Rojas-Meneses, a Mexican national, got credit for 219 days served, but Judge Dana Christensen wasn’t letting him stick around. He pleaded guilty to illegal reentry into the United States after a raid on a Belgrade residence August 12, 2025.
Rojas-Meneses admitted he had no legal right to be in the country, and a check of his record showed this wasn’t his first time playing this game. Border Patrol records revealed he’d been previously deported twice through El Paso, Texas – September 1, 2024, and again September 23, 2024 – without seeking permission to return. It’s a classic cycle: cross the border, get caught, get kicked out, and try again.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Zeno Baucus led the prosecution. The bust was a multi-agency effort, bringing together the U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Belgrade Police Department, and the Montana Division of Criminal Investigations. They worked together to track Rojas-Meneses and build the case.
The Department of Justice is touting the case as a win for “Operation Take Back America,” a broad-stroke program aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration and disrupting cartel activity. But for Rojas-Meneses, it simply means another one-way trip south of the border. Whether the broader operation delivers on its promises remains to be seen.
