New York – In a hard-fought victory for New York and New Jersey commuters, Attorney General Letitia James has secured a court order blocking the shutdown of the Gateway Program’s Hudson River Tunnel project. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York granted a temporary restraining order on February 6, halting the Trump administration’s efforts to halt funding for this critical infrastructure project.
James and New Jersey Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport filed a lawsuit on February 3, arguing that the Trump administration’s monthslong funding freeze threatened to bring construction to an abrupt halt. Such action would have resulted in thousands of jobs at risk and left a vital transit corridor in dangerous disrepair, according to the lawsuit.
“This is a critical victory for workers and commuters,” James stated. “We will keep fighting to ensure this project can continue without unnecessary federal interference.”
The Hudson Tunnel Project is one of the most important infrastructure projects in the nation, aimed at improving transit between New York City and New Jersey. The temporary restraining order allows construction to proceed as planned, at least for now.
Attorney General James expressed gratitude to the court for acting swiftly to prevent a senseless funding freeze that could have derailed the project, which is essential to regional connectivity and economic development.
This decision represents a significant win for New York and New Jersey in their ongoing battle against federal interference with critical infrastructure projects. The fight to keep the Hudson Tunnel Project moving forward continues.
