AG James Unveils Footage in Jumaane Wright Shooting

New York – In a pivotal move aimed at bolstering public trust and transparency in law enforcement, Attorney General Letitia James has released body-worn camera footage of the fatal shooting of Jumaane Wright by NYPD officers. The incident took place on April 29, 2025, along the Belt Parkway near Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn.

Wright was shot at approximately 8:10 p.m., following an encounter with the police. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The release of the footage is part of the Attorney General’s Office directive to publicize camera recordings obtained during OSI investigations, as per New York State Executive Law Section 70-b.

The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) conducts thorough assessments of every incident involving potential officer-related deaths, whether on-duty or off-duty. If an officer may have caused the death, OSI initiates a full investigation. It is important to note that today’s release does not imply any opinion regarding guilt or innocence in the criminal matter.

“This video contains content that viewers may find disturbing,” James warned. “The public has a right to see what happened and understand how these incidents are being addressed.” The Attorney General emphasized that the footage is intended to enhance transparency, rather than prejudge any parties involved.

The incident has reignited discussions about police practices and accountability in New York City. As the investigation continues, calls for further action and oversight of the NYPD have grown louder. The release of this footage marks a significant step in the ongoing dialogue surrounding police-community relations.
