New York – In a shock to the legal community, New York Attorney General Letitia James and State Police Superintendent Steven G. James have announced the arrest and indictment of Jasper Mills, a former Albany County prosecutor turned defense attorney, for tampering with witnesses in a high-profile homicide trial.
Mills, who faced five charges including intimidating and tampering with a witness, is accused of violating an Albany County protective order by sharing confidential information on cooperating witnesses. His actions are said to have led to a life-threatening situation for one of the witnesses, resulting in death threats and a brutal slashing attack while the witness was incarcerated.
Attorney General James emphasized the gravity of witness intimidation: “Witnesses like those targeted by Jasper Mills are essential to the justice system, and their safety must be our priority. My office will not stand idly by as illegal tactics threaten public safety and fair trials.”
The case revolves around a gang-related murder prosecution involving defendant Vramir Branch. Mills represented Branch during the trial for the 2021 shooting of Shanita Thomas. Despite protective orders in place, Mills shared sensitive witness information with his client, which led to the witness being targeted by prison inmates.
Superintendent James highlighted the need for accountability: “This investigation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting witnesses and ensuring justice is served without fear or intimidation.”
The cooperating witness was initially threatened in FCI Ray Brook, New York, and later subjected to another violent attack while in protective custody. Mills’ alleged role in this saga will be further explored as he faces arraignment in Albany County Court.
