PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In a stunning turn of events, Anthony Gianetti, a 27-year-old resident of Buffalo, New York, has been sentenced to two years probation and ordered to complete 150 hours of community service for his involvement in the illegal importation of steroids from China. The sentence, imposed by Chief United States District Judge Gary L. Lancaster, came as a surprise after Gianetti was caught with vials and tablets containing six types of anabolic steroids at the Monroeville Post Office on May 5, 2008.
The judge noted that the leniency in sentencing was due to Gianetti’s youth at the time of his crime and his subsequent academic achievements. Assistant United States Attorney Leo M. Dillon led the prosecution against Gianetti, who faced a Guidelines range of 8-14 months imprisonment.
United States Attorney David J. Hickton praised the Pennsylvania State Police, the Postal Inspection Service, and DHS Immigration and Customs Enforcement for their roles in investigating and bringing Gianetti to justice.
Gianetti’s importation spree began when he received a parcel from the People’s Republic of China that contained his illegal cargo. The court heard that this conviction marked the end of a significant operation involving dangerous substances that could have posed a threat to public safety.
Despite the lenient sentence, Gianetti is now facing the harsh realities of community service and probation. His transgression serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with drug trafficking and the lengths some will go to avoid detection.
