SYRACUSE, NY – A sprawling drug trafficking network peddling poison across Central New York has been dismantled, authorities announced today. Seventeen individuals are facing a staggering 125 charges related to the distribution of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, according to New York Attorney General Letitia James. The bust, a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, seized enough fentanyl to kill a New Yorker every six seconds for an entire year.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Attorney General’s Organized Crime Task Force (OCTF), uncovered a massive haul of illicit substances: over 23 pounds of fentanyl valued at more than $625,000, nearly four pounds of cocaine worth over $125,000, and more than 12 pounds of methamphetamine, estimated at over $32,000. Beyond the drugs, authorities also confiscated $880,000 in cash, three illegal firearms, and two vehicles used in the operation. The indictment was unsealed today in Onondaga County Court.
“Traffickers who flood our communities with fentanyl and other drugs are threatening the important progress New York has made in reducing overdoses and fighting the opioid crisis,” Attorney General James stated bluntly. “Thanks to the hard work of this investigation and our law enforcement partners, we took more than five million deadly doses of fentanyl off our streets. I will continue to use every resource at my disposal to put an end to these destructive drug trafficking rings and keep New Yorkers safe from dangerous narcotics.”
Law enforcement officials lauded the collaborative spirit of the operation. Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile emphasized, “Law enforcement is never stronger than when we work as a team.” Chief Patrick Phelan, Executive Director of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police, echoed the sentiment, stating the operation struck “a significant blow to the criminals that put poison on our streets.” Onondaga County Sheriff Tobias Shelley added that the quantities of fentanyl seized were “capable of mass destruction.”
Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol highlighted the thoroughness of the investigation, noting the involvement of numerous state, county, and local agencies. “As a result of everyone’s work, 17 individuals involved in a major cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine trafficking ring that has been operating in the Central New York area are now off the streets and this criminal organization has been dismantled,” Maciol said. Madison County Sheriff Todd Hood affirmed his office’s dedication to enforcing narcotics laws.
While authorities have not yet released the names of all 17 defendants, the charges they face are substantial, signaling a serious crackdown on drug trafficking in the region. The investigation remains ongoing, and further arrests are possible. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as they become available. This bust serves as a grim reminder of the relentless flow of deadly narcotics into New York communities and the ongoing battle to stem the tide.
