Cleveland Man Faces Federal Charges After Deputy U.S. Marshal Shooting

On October 15, 2025, an Ohio man named Larry Leon Dwight Wiley, 55, from Cleveland, was arrested and charged with assault on a federal officer following a terrifying barricade incident. Wiley reportedly shot at Deputy U.S. Marshal who had responded to execute an arrest warrant for a previous federal violation.

The event unfolded when members of the Cleveland U.S. Marshals Service arrived at Wiley’s apartment to serve the warrant. The suspect, in a fit of aggression, opened fire as officers entered his unit, striking one deputy in the arm with a .380 caliber round. The injured officer was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Wiley appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jennifer Dowdell Armstrong on October 16 and was ordered to remain in custody. Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer requested the detention, emphasizing that Wiley’s actions put law enforcement officers’ lives at risk.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi expressed her gratitude for the deputy’s recovery and vowed to pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law. ‘Any attack on law enforcement is an attack on our society itself,’ she stated.

U.S. Attorney Toepfer echoed this sentiment, stating that they would aggressively prosecute anyone who harms federal officers pursuing their mission of protecting the public. He also commended local and federal agencies for their swift response to the incident.

Larry Wiley faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of assault on a federal officer with a deadly or dangerous weapon. The investigation is ongoing, with support from the FBI Cleveland Division, ATF, and the Cleveland Division of Police.
