LAS VEGAS, NM – A former Luna Community College employee is alleging a sustained campaign of sexual harassment perpetrated by the school’s now-former president. Federal prosecutors filed suit today in New Mexico’s U.S. District Court, outlining a pattern of unwanted physical contact, lewd gestures, and explicit comments directed at Charlene Ortiz-Cordova.
According to the complaint, the alleged harassment spanned several months. Ortiz-Cordova claims the former college president subjected her to a hostile work environment through repeated unwanted advances and sexually suggestive behavior. The feds allege the school was aware of the situation but failed to intervene or take corrective action to protect Ortiz-Cordova.
“This isn’t about policy violations, it’s about a clear abuse of power,” stated Acting Assistant Attorney General Grace Chung Becker. “Title VII exists to shield workers – especially women – from this kind of predatory behavior. When employers turn a blind eye, we will hold them accountable.” Becker’s statement signals a renewed focus on workplace harassment cases by federal prosecutors.
The lawsuit centers on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on sex, among other protected characteristics. It also protects employees who report unlawful practices or participate in related investigations. The feds are seeking relief for Ortiz-Cordova and aiming to force Luna Community College to implement stronger policies to prevent future harassment.
This marks the first Title VII lawsuit filed by federal prosecutors this year, following twelve such cases in 2008. While the details of the allegations are disturbing, they are unfortunately not unique. Workplace harassment continues to plague institutions across the country, and the feds appear determined to address it head-on.
Luna Community College has not yet issued a public statement regarding the lawsuit. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. For more information on Title VII and federal employment laws, visit the Department’s website.
