DeKalb, IL – Kevin Hagemeier, 33, will spend the next 86 months in a federal penitentiary after pleading guilty to robbing a Jimmy John’s sandwich shop and a Heartland Bank in late 2022. The feds announced the sentencing this week, closing the book on a pair of brazen crimes that rattled the usually quiet communities of DeKalb and Sycamore, Illinois.
Hagemeier’s spree began with the Jimmy John’s robbery. He walked into the store and slapped a note on the counter, claiming he was armed and demanding cash. Employees, fearing for their safety, complied. He then bolted, jumping into a waiting vehicle driven by an accomplice. Days later, he repeated the same tactic at the Heartland Bank, again making off with an undisclosed amount of money. The whole operation was swift, calculated, and left telltale signs of desperation.
U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston handed down the 86-month sentence, a clear message that such behavior won’t be tolerated. The feds successfully argued that Hagemeier’s actions fell under the Hobbs Act, a federal law prohibiting robbery and extortion that impacts interstate commerce. The lengthy sentence reflects the seriousness of the charges and the potential for escalating violence in such crimes.
The investigation quickly revealed the involvement of an accomplice, whose identity has not been fully released. While Hagemeier took the fall and pleaded guilty in December, the feds are still piecing together the accomplice’s role and potential charges. Sources close to the investigation suggest the accomplice provided not only transportation but also assisted in the planning of the robberies, increasing their level of culpability.
The DeKalb Police Department was instrumental in the initial stages of the investigation, collecting crucial evidence and quickly identifying Hagemeier as a prime suspect. They then partnered with the FBI, who took the lead in building a solid federal case. The cooperation between local and federal law enforcement proved essential in bringing Hagemeier to justice.
Acting U.S. Attorney Morris Pasqual and FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Robert W. Wheeler, Jr. announced the sentencing, emphasizing the commitment of federal prosecutors to protect the community from violent crime. “This sentence sends a strong message that those who threaten the safety of our citizens and businesses will be held accountable,” Pasqual stated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert S. Ladd prosecuted the case, skillfully presenting the evidence that led to Hagemeier’s conviction.
While Hagemeier’s prison term offers some closure, questions remain about his accomplice and whether they will face similar consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story as it develops, digging deeper into the underbelly of crime in the Midwest and exposing the individuals who prey on our communities.
