New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced the indictment and arraignment of former New York City Police Department (NYPD) Officer Stanley Cadet, 27, of North Babylon, and civilian Kayla Lopez, 28, of Bayshore, on charges including Manslaughter in the Second Degree following a deadly traffic collision. The incident occurred on May 11, 2024, when Cadet and Lopez were off-duty and speeding at over 100 MPH, leading to the tragic death of Anna Wilson, who was ejected from Lopez’s vehicle.
The arraignment took place before Judge Ambro in Suffolk County, where both were released on supervised release. They are due back in court on November 17, 2025, facing a potential sentence of five to 15 years in prison if convicted.
The charges against Cadet and Lopez include Assault in the Second and Third Degrees, Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, Reckless Driving, Excessive Speed, and Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device. The collision occurred at 2:20 a.m. on Union Boulevard in West Islip when both vehicles disregarded a steady red light and collided, with Lopez’s vehicle striking multiple telephone poles.
Under New York Executive Law Section 70-b, the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) was tasked with investigating the incident. Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order appointing the AG’s office as special prosecutor in this case, marking a significant step in the investigation process.
Criminal charges are accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
