FRANKFORT, KY – Melissa Wilhoite, 40, of Versailles, Kentucky, is facing 15 years – 180 months – in federal prison after pleading guilty to poisoning two cellmates with fentanyl while locked up in the Woodford County Detention Center.

According to court documents, Wilhoite smuggled the deadly drug into the jail after her own arrest on November 21, 2024. The next day, guards found two inmates overdosing, unconscious and turning blue. Emergency responders rushed them to the hospital. Wilhoite confessed to dealing the fentanyl within the jail walls.

Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove handed down the sentence Wednesday. Wilhoite will serve at least 85% of her term, followed by three years of supervised release.

The bust was a joint operation between the DEA’s Louisville Field Division and the Versailles Police Department. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul McCaffrey said the case highlights the dangers of fentanyl even inside correctional facilities.
