James and 24 States Sue Trump Admin Over AmeriCorps Dismantling

New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched a lawsuit against the Trump administration to prevent the dismantling of AmeriCorps, an organization that supports over 200,000 volunteers delivering essential services across America.

The coalition includes 24 states and seeks to stop what they describe as ‘illegal attempts’ by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to terminate AmeriCorps staff. The lawsuit aims to declare President Trump’s actions as illegal and enjoin further dismantling.

AmeriCorps, an independent federal agency since 1993, has been a cornerstone in disaster relief, anti-poverty efforts, education, health programs, and veteran services. Its funding was cut by at least 50 percent with the cancellation of over $30 million in grants to New York alone, impacting 1,200 AmeriCorps members.

In New York, AmeriCorps operates through the Commission on National and Community Service, providing vital services like tutoring, housing assistance, environmental restoration, veterans’ support, and addiction services. The lawsuit highlights the critical role of these programs in the state’s most vulnerable communities.

Attorney General James emphasizes the importance of AmeriCorps members who embody a spirit of service: ‘The Trump administration’s illegal attempt to gut AmeriCorps will hurt this program which promotes civic pride and public service.’

The lawsuit comes after reports indicated that AmeriCorps grants were canceled en masse on April 25, further complicating the situation for the volunteers and communities they serve.
