James Lanza Launches Legal Observation Project to Monitor NY ICE

NUEVA YORK – A bold move by New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, saw the launch of the Legal Observation Project, a new endeavor aimed at monitoring and documenting the actions of federal immigration authorities across the state. The project, initiated by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), seeks to protect the rights of New Yorkers through comprehensive documentation of significant law enforcement activities.

The initiative will deploy trained legal observers to document ICE operations and related protests in real-time, ensuring accurate information is gathered. These neutral witnesses on the ground will record data that could aid future legal actions. Amidst a rise in federal immigration control efforts across the nation, this project promises to guarantee timely and precise information collection and identify any law violations.

Attorney General James emphasized the importance of protecting constitutional rights. ‘As Attorney General, I am proud to protect the free speech, peaceful assembly, and lives of New Yorkers without fear of illegal federal actions,’ she stated. ‘We’ve seen in Minnesota how quickly and tragically federal operations can escalate due to lack of transparency and accountability. My office is launching the Legal Observation Project to examine federal law enforcement activities in New York and determine if they stay within legal bounds.’

Volunteer employees from the OAG, trained for this project, will begin on-site monitoring in the coming weeks. They will send two legal observers equipped with safety vests and OAG logos to document police actions when necessary. The observers’ role is solely to document federal authority’s actions safely and legally without interference.

As the chief law enforcement official in New York, Attorney General James is responsible for enforcing the law and protecting civil rights and constitutional freedoms of all New Yorkers. The Legal Observation Project supports this mission by ensuring the OAG has timely and precise information to evaluate if law enforcement activities comply with local, state, and federal laws.

Attorney General James also encourages New Yorkers to submit videos or other documentation of ICE actions directly to the OAG through its secure online portal. Reports submitted through this portal will help the OAG assess the situation in real-time and determine if further investigation or direct observation is warranted. The Legal Observation Project marks another step by Attorney General James in protecting the rights of New Yorkers against illegal federal activity.
