James Pushes Congress for Tariff Refund Legislation

New York – In a bold move against the Trump administration’s controversial tariff policy, Attorney General Letitia James has joined forces with 17 other state attorneys general to demand Congress enact legislation ensuring swift refunds for businesses and consumers alike.

The Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of AG James and her coalition, striking down tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as unlawful. These tariffs, totaling an estimated $166 billion, have pushed up prices across the board, particularly hitting low-income families hard.

AG James emphasizes that New Yorkers have been overcharged for months due to these policies and deserve immediate relief. She argues that while the administration has promised refunds in court, the process is too convoluted and leaves many businesses and individuals at a disadvantage.

The tariffs imposed by President Trump in April 2025 were based on the claim of IEEPA authority, which AG James challenged. The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down these tariffs came as a victory for the coalition, but left the issue of refunds unresolved.

Attorney General James is now pushing for legislation that would streamline the refund process, ensuring all importers receive their due compensation quickly and efficiently. She also calls for accountability from businesses that passed on tariff costs directly to consumers.

This move by AG James underscores the ongoing struggle against the Trump administration’s economic policies and the fight for justice for those affected by these unlawful tariffs.
