La Raza Gang Members Busted in Utah Meth, Heroin Sweep

SLC – A coordinated law enforcement crackdown has resulted in the arrest of 13 alleged members of the La Raza gang and associates, who were targeted for their role in methamphetamine and heroin distribution across Utah.

The arrests, a result of Operation Targeting Methamphetamine and Heroin Distribution, followed two indictments unsealed this week. The suspects face charges including distribution of meth and heroin, conspiracy to distribute, possession with intent to distribute, and money laundering.

In a massive sweep, law enforcement seized approximately 10 pounds of drugs, seven firearms, eight vehicles, and $175,000 in cash during the arrests and searches on Wednesday. Agencies like the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, IRS Criminal Investigation, local police departments, and the U.S. Marshals Service all played pivotal roles.

The joint operation is a response to the growing threat posed by gang involvement in drug trafficking. Distribution activities are often linked to violence due to disputes over control of territory and enforcement of drug debts. This case is part of an ongoing effort to protect the safety of Utah communities from such threats.

Juan Lazareno, 30, of Santa Clara, faces life in prison with a minimum sentence of ten years for distribution of methamphetamine. Another defendant, Wayne LeRoy Burr, also known as Miclo, and Samuel Covarrubias-Velazquez, aka Pollo, are charged with conspiracy to distribute both drugs.

The majority of the 31-count indictment charges defendants with various counts of drug distribution, possession, and money laundering. Alejandro Arciniega-Zetin, age 24, remains at large.
