GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Thomas Shannon, a 44-year-old former orthodontist from Byron Center, Michigan, will spend the next six decades behind bars after being sentenced to 60 years in prison for the sexual exploitation of children. The case, spearheaded by ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), exposed a predator who systematically groomed and abused vulnerable teenagers online.
The horrifying scope of Shannon’s crimes came to light when a 16-year-old girl in North Carolina reported being sexually exploited through Snapchat. Investigators quickly traced the online interactions to Shannon, who was practicing orthodontics in Grandville at the time. A deep dive into his Snapchat account revealed he had targeted at least 16 additional children, one as young as 12 years old. The investigation, which spanned from 2019 to 2024, revealed a calculated pattern of online predation.
Even after being released on bond for state child sexual abuse material charges, Shannon didn’t stop. He continued his depraved behavior, meeting and exploiting another victim through a different online application while aboard his yacht in Ottawa County. That yacht has now been forfeited as part of the criminal prosecution, a small measure of recompense for the lasting damage he inflicted.
“Protecting children from exploitation is at the heart of Homeland Security Investigations’ mission,” said Jared Murphey, acting Special Agent in Charge of HSI Detroit. “This offender preyed on vulnerable children, but through extensive collaboration… we were able to identify victims and ensure the defendant was held accountable.” Murphey’s statement, while standard agency boilerplate, underscores the gravity of the offenses.
U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey didn’t mince words, stating he wasn’t surprised by the lengthy sentence. “Shannon’s selfish and senseless exploitation of these children has exposed them to a lifetime of emotional damage,” VerHey said. “I sincerely hope they can overcome it. But preying on our children must stop, and we will seek long sentences against people like Shannon until it does stop.” The victims’ recovery will undoubtedly be a long and arduous process.
The successful prosecution was a collaborative effort involving HSI Grand Rapids, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the Fuquay-Varina Police Department, and the Prince George’s County Police Department, operating under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood. Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young emphasized the importance of this interagency cooperation: “This investigation demonstrates how local, state and federal partners work together to identify offenders, locate victims, and hold those responsible accountable.” The case serves as a chilling reminder of the predators lurking online and the urgent need for continued vigilance.
