Milwaukee Mom Swindled Medicaid for $2.3M

⏱ 3 min read

Milwaukee mom Markita Barnes, 33, is starting a decade-plus stretch in federal prison after a jury convicted her of systematically looting Wisconsin’s Medicaid program. Barnes ran a prenatal care coordination company in Milwaukee and siphoned off a staggering $2,361,799.17 meant to help at-risk pregnant women and mothers with young children. The sentencing landed March 17, 2026, following a trial that wrapped in November 2025.

Prosecutors detailed a complex scheme involving ten counts of healthcare fraud, three counts of making false statements related to healthcare, kickbacks, and a clumsy attempt to cover her tracks. Barnes also faced money laundering and aggravated identity theft charges. She tried to argue her innocence, but the jury saw right through it, finding her guilty on every single count.

Judge Pamela Pepper didn’t pull any punches during sentencing. She blasted Barnes for damaging public trust and, more importantly, effectively gutting a vital program. The judge revealed Wisconsin had been forced to drastically scale back Medicaid benefits, making it nearly impossible for those who truly needed assistance—all thanks to brazen fraud like Barnes’.

The 121-month sentence is just the beginning. Judge Pepper also ordered Barnes to forfeit the entire $2.3 million she stole and pay full restitution to Medicaid. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad D. Schimel said the punishment holds Barnes accountable for preying on the most vulnerable and stealing from those “most in need of public assistance.”
