New York – A grim investigation has been launched by the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) into the tragic death of Eric Davis, who met his end in a violent confrontation with Rochester Police Department (RPD) officers on December 19. The OSI’s probe comes in response to an incident that unfolded in Rochester, Monroe County.
The nightmarish encounter began at approximately 10:23 p.m., as two RPD officers responded to a reported break-in attempt. Their confrontation with Mr. Davis ended in bloodshed when the civilian, wielding a handgun, opened fire on the officers. In the crossfire, at least one officer returned fire. Mr. Davis, armed and dangerous, took off on foot.
Not long after, another officer caught up to Davis. A tense standoff ensued, culminating in Mr. Davis’s fatal shot against this third officer before being taken down by a fourth officer’s gunfire. The handgun was recovered at the scene of Mr. Davis’ demise.
The aftermath was equally harrowing. Three officers and one civilian were injured during the encounter and are currently receiving medical attention. One officer has been released from the hospital, with all parties expected to recover from their injuries.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is legally mandated to assess every incident where a police or peace officer may have caused a civilian’s death. If an officer’s involvement in the death is deemed probable by OSI, a thorough investigation follows. The case against Eric Davis and the RPD officers continues to unfold as preliminary facts are assessed and subject to change.
