NY AG Blocks Trump Admin from Banning Transgender Health Ed

New York Attorney General Letitia James has scored a victory for transparency and inclusivity in education, as she successfully fought back against the Trump administration’s attempt to censor transgender and nonbinary health information from sexual education programs.

In a move that echoes the fight for truth and equality, AG James secured a court order that bars the federal government from enforcing its illegal directive to delete references to gender identity and transgender status from these vital programs. The order was issued in response to the administration’s attempt to withhold tens of millions of dollars from highly effective sexual education grant programs unless states agreed to alter their curricula.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had arbitrarily changed the conditions for awarding funds, stipulating that no grant money could be used for programs that included information about or acknowledged transgender, intersex, or nonbinary individuals. This discriminatory stance was met with a lawsuit filed by AG James and 15 other attorneys general from across the nation.

Joining in the legal battle were the attorneys general of Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The United States District Court for the District of Oregon ruled in favor of the states, issuing a preliminary injunction that prevents the administration from implementing its unconstitutional conditions.

Attorney General James emphasized the importance of accurate health education for young people, stating, ‘Politics has no place in our young people’s health education. Denying the existence of transgender and nonbinary individuals is cruel and wrong, and I will keep fighting to ensure young people get the accurate health information they need.’

This victory stands as a testament to the ongoing struggle for truth, inclusivity, and equality in the realm of education and underscores the commitment of AG James to protecting the rights of all New Yorkers.
