NY AG James Slams Proposed AI Regulation Blockade

New York – In a bold move against what she deems an unwarranted federal overreach, New York Attorney General Letitia James has united with 36 of her peers from across the nation to demand Congress reject language in the NDAA that would strip states of their ability to regulate artificial intelligence.

“Every state should be able to enact and enforce its own AI regulations,” AG James declares. “Blocking this autonomy endangers children, public health, economic stability, and national security.”

The letter from the bipartisan coalition highlights the myriad risks of unchecked AI technologies, including the exacerbation of child exploitation, the proliferation of deepfake scams, and inappropriate interactions with minors via AI chatbots.

“Certain AI chatbots have been shown to harm our children’s mental health,” James emphasizes. “We cannot afford to leave this technology unregulated.”

States like New York are already taking action, enacting laws that require AI chatbots to detect and address suicidal ideation and self-harm expressions. The coalition argues that preempting state legislation would undermine these vital protections.

The attorneys general warn against the unintended consequences of federal preemption, advocating for a more flexible approach that allows states to tailor regulations to their unique needs while promoting thoughtful federal guidelines.
