Queens Death Sparks OSI Probe into NYPD Encounter

New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has announced a formal investigation into the tragic incident involving Chez Fray, whose death on December 21st following an encounter with NYPD officers has sparked community outrage.

On that fateful night, around 12:35 a.m., officers were dispatched to a Queens apartment building in response to a 911 call. When they arrived at the scene, they encountered Fray in possession of a boxcutter. Despite orders to surrender the weapon, Fray reportedly refused. The situation escalated quickly as one officer discharged their service weapon, striking Mr. Fray. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is mandated to assess incidents where police or peace officers may have caused the death of an individual by act or omission. This includes situations regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty, and irrespective of the status of the deceased – armed, unarmed, in custody, or incarcerated.

These are preliminary facts subject to change, but OSI is committed to a thorough investigation. The public’s trust is paramount, and the agency will ensure that all legal avenues are explored.

The death of Chez Fray has prompted calls for accountability from various quarters. The OSI probe aims to provide transparency and clarity in this distressing case.

As details unfold, the community awaits answers and a resolution that respects the memory of Mr. Fray.
