San Diego resident Pedro Escamilla Del Rosario will spend the next three decades behind bars after being sentenced for a particularly vile act of child exploitation. The 44-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, stemming from the horrific abuse of an eight-year-old girl who had been deliberately drugged. The sickening crime wasn’t a one-time event, but was captured on video by an accomplice, adding another layer of depravity to the case.
The case first surfaced when Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) flagged suspicious activity on a Google account. Investigators discovered a massive cache of digital files containing explicit content involving children. A deep dive into the data quickly pointed to Del Rosario as the source, with thousands of images and videos linked back to him. Two videos, created in March 2018, proved crucial in securing the conviction.
During the sentencing hearing, the courtroom was filled with the weight of the victim’s trauma. Heart-wrenching statements from the young girl and her foster parent laid bare the irreparable damage inflicted by Del Rosario’s actions. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Sherwood argued forcefully for the maximum sentence, stressing both the depravity of the crime and the urgent need to protect other vulnerable children.
Federal prosecutors presented evidence showing Del Rosario not only committed the abuse but also actively possessed and distributed the explicit material. He confessed to creating the videos and admitted to having a substantial collection of similar content. The sheer volume of evidence underscored the calculated and predatory nature of his crimes.
U.S. District Judge Todd W. Robinson didn’t hesitate. He handed down a 360-month (30-year) sentence, stating that the maximum penalty was necessary to safeguard the community and reflect the severity of the harm caused to the victim. The judge made it clear that Del Rosario’s actions demanded the full weight of the law.
“This case is a stark reminder of the predators who lurk in our communities and the devastating impact their crimes have on innocent children,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Haden. “We will relentlessly pursue those who exploit and abuse our most vulnerable citizens.” HSI Special Agent Chad Plantz echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the long-lasting psychological damage inflicted on child victims and HSI’s unwavering commitment to fighting this type of abuse.
The investigation involved a collaborative effort between HSI, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Their combined resources and dedication were instrumental in bringing Del Rosario to justice and sending a clear message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated.
Del Rosario’s conviction serves as a grim warning and a testament to the ongoing fight against child sexual exploitation. While no sentence can fully undo the harm caused, the hope is that this outcome provides some measure of closure for the victim and prevents Del Rosario from ever harming another child.
