WYANDANCH, NY – A man is dead after a confrontation with Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) officers, and New York Attorney General Letitia James isn’t holding back. Today, she dumped a cache of bodycam footage into the public domain, revealing the moments leading up to the death of Henry Sanders on August 1, 2024. The footage, raw and unsettling, shows officers attempting to subdue Sanders outside a store on North 15th Street and Merritt Avenue, before he became unresponsive.
The incident began around 10:22 AM when SCPD responded to multiple 911 calls at the Wyandanch location. What those calls reported remains unclear, but the footage shows officers immediately moving to take Sanders into custody. The attempt quickly turned physical, and officers are seen struggling to handcuff him. According to the Attorney General’s office, Sanders lost consciousness during the struggle and was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Attorney General James’ Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is handling the case, mandated by New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which requires investigation into any death potentially caused by a police officer’s actions – on or off duty. The OSI isn’t just looking at whether a crime was committed; they’re examining every detail of the encounter, from the initial 911 call to the moment Sanders was transported to the hospital. This isn’t a simple internal review; it’s a full-blown investigation with teeth.
“The release of this footage is not an expression of any opinion as to the guilt or innocence of any party in a criminal matter,” James’ office stated in a press release. A carefully worded disclaimer, perhaps, but it doesn’t diminish the impact of seeing the encounter unfold on video. The AG’s office insists transparency is paramount, a move aimed at bolstering public trust in a system often shrouded in secrecy. Whether it will achieve that goal remains to be seen.
The footage itself is difficult to watch. While details of what prompted the initial police response are still emerging, the video raises serious questions about the officers’ tactics and the speed with which the situation escalated. Viewers are warned the content is disturbing, and rightly so. It’s a stark reminder of the potential for deadly force in everyday police interactions, and the need for accountability when things go wrong.
The OSI investigation is ongoing. The Attorney General’s office has not indicated whether any charges will be filed against the officers involved. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case closely, digging for answers and holding those responsible – if any – accountable for the death of Henry Sanders. The full bodycam footage is available on the Attorney General’s website, but be warned: it’s not for the faint of heart.
