Seven U.S. citizens have been found guilty in Pensacola, Florida, for their roles in a massive international child pornography ring. The defendants faced charges including conspiracy to distribute and possess child pornography, as well as obstruction of justice.
The operation was described by federal prosecutors as a sophisticated enterprise that utilized advanced computer encryption technology to traffic in illegal images. It spanned two years and targeted prepubescent children, with over 400,000 images and videos of sexual abuse being shared.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich emphasized the swift and aggressive response from law enforcement, both domestically and internationally. The network was dismantled through a complex investigation involving around 50 witnesses and 500 exhibits.
The defendants convicted at trial include James Freeman, Gary Lakey, Marvin Lambert, Neville McGarity, Warren Mumpower, Daniel Castleman, and Ronald White. Each faces a minimum of 20 years in prison and up to life imprisonment, along with substantial fines and potential lifetime supervised release.
Acting U.S. Attorney Thomas F. Kirwin highlighted the collaborative efforts of U.S. and international law enforcement agencies, commending the dedication of Assistant U.S. Attorney David L. Goldberg, CEOS Trial Attorney LisaMarie Freitas, Appellate Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert G. Davies, and Queensland Constable Brenden Power.
Sentencing for all defendants is scheduled for April 14, 2009, sending a strong message that the culture of abuse and torture in child pornography will not be tolerated.
