West Branch Man Charged With Child Pornography Receipt

Brady Verlo, a 22-year-old resident of West Branch, Iowa, has been slapped with a federal charge for the receipt of child pornography. The charge stems from an Indictment filed on January 28, 2014, in the United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.

The allegations against Verlo claim that he received child pornography in August 2013. If convicted, he faces daunting penalties, including a mandatory minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment and up to a maximum of twenty years, alongside a $250,000 fine and at least five years on supervised release following any prison term.

Today, Verlo appeared in federal court in Cedar Rapids without bond. His next appearance for a detention hearing is scheduled for February 5, 2014.

This case is being aggressively prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, the Iowa City Police Department, and the West Branch Police Department.

Brady Verlo’s arrest is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. More information about this critical initiative can be found at www.usdoj.gov/psc.
