Breana VanDyck, 28, of Tucson, Ariz., was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison after a jury found her guilty of mailing child pornography, a crime that cut deep into the already horrifying case involving her imprisoned husband.
U.S. Chief District Judge Raner C. Collins handed down the sentence, which will be followed by lifetime supervised release under strict sex offender conditions. VanDyck is required to register as a sex offender, a legal mark she will carry for life.
VanDyck used the U.S. Postal Service to print and send illicit material to her husband, who was in custody at the Central Arizona Detention Center (CADC) awaiting trial on separate federal charges related to the possession and production of child pornography. The act didn’t just break the law—it weaponized the mail system to fuel an ongoing cycle of child sexual exploitation.
The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, the Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the rising tide of child sexual abuse and online exploitation. Spearheaded by U.S. Attorneys and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, the project unites federal, state, and local agencies to hunt down offenders and rescue victims.
Investigation was led by the Tucson Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Tucson field office. Prosecutors Carmen F. Corbin and Erica L. Seger of the District of Arizona, Tucson, secured the conviction after a September jury trial that laid bare the couple’s disturbing criminal conduct.
