Daniel C. Irwin, a 39-year-old Platte City man and former assistant vice president of accounting at a Kansas City, Mo., corporation, was sentenced to 13 years and nine months in federal prison without parole after admitting to distributing child pornography and attempting to trade incest videos for access to two minor girls.
U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark handed down the sentence in federal court today, also ordering 20 years of supervised release. Irwin pleaded guilty on July 7, 2016, to one count of distributing child pornography over the Internet—a crime exposed during a sting operation led by Kansas City police and the FBI.
Court documents reveal Irwin initiated contact with an undercover detective, sending a video depicting child sexual abuse. The exchange escalated when Irwin proposed trading more illicit material—specifically incest pornography—for the chance to have sex with the detective’s fictional daughters, ages 12 and 16.
On August 4, 2014, Irwin followed through, sending additional child porn videos to the undercover officer. The meeting was never allowed to proceed. Instead, law enforcement moved in, arresting Irwin before any physical encounter could take place.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick D. Daly prosecuted the case, which was investigated jointly by the Kansas City Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Authorities emphasized the role of digital surveillance and proactive stings in halting predators before they harm real children.
The case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, the DOJ’s national initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. The program combines federal, state, and local efforts to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders—and to rescue victims before further damage is done.
