Hammond, IN – Manuel Ramos, a 42-year-old resident of Gary, Indiana, was handed a 40-month prison sentence after being convicted on February 14, 2017, for possession of a firearm by a felon. The severe punishment came after Ramos pleaded guilty before District Court Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen.
According to court documents, Ramos’s illegal activities were uncovered during an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in May and June 2016. The ATF probe revealed that Ramos had acquired firearms with the intent to sell them for profit within the Northern District of Indiana.
Ramos’s sentence also included a term of two years of supervised release following his prison term. The investigation leading to Ramos’s conviction was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas McGrath, who oversaw the case from start to finish.
The ATF, known for its robust approach to curbing illegal gun activity, played a critical role in this case, ensuring that justice was served. Ramos’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who flout firearm laws in Indiana and beyond.
United States Attorney David A. Capp announced the sentence, emphasizing the importance of enforcing federal firearms laws to keep communities safe. ‘The ATF investigation has once again proven its effectiveness in identifying and bringing to justice individuals who pose a threat to public safety through illegal firearm activity,’ said Capp.
Ramos’s sentencing is the latest chapter in the ongoing battle against illegal gun possession and sales in Gary and across Indiana. As law enforcement continues to crack down on such crimes, it underscores the need for vigilance and cooperation from all levels of society.
