VERSAILLES, KY – Melissa Wilhoite, 40, is facing a long stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 180 months – fifteen years – in federal prison Wednesday. She pleaded guilty to peddling fentanyl inside the Woodford County Detention Center, nearly killing two fellow inmates.

According to court documents, Wilhoite managed to smuggle a stash of the deadly opioid into the jail after her own arrest on November 21, 2024. She then distributed it to two cellmates. On November 22nd, jail staff found the women overdosing – unresponsive and turning blue. Both were rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Wilhoite admitted to the deal. Federal sentencing guidelines mean she’ll serve at least 85% of that 15-year sentence. After release, she’ll be under federal supervision for another three years.

The bust was a joint operation by the DEA’s Louisville Field Division and the Versailles Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Walker brought the case to court.
