VERSAILLES, KY – Melissa Wilhoite, 40, is facing 15 years in federal prison after admitting she flooded the Woodford County Detention Center with fentanyl, nearly killing two inmates. Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove handed down the 180-month sentence Wednesday for two counts of distributing the deadly opioid.

The case unraveled November 22, 2024, when jail staff discovered two inmates overdosing. An investigation revealed Wilhoite, who had been arrested the day prior, had managed to smuggle a stash of fentanyl into the jail. She then peddled the dope to her cellmates, triggering the near-fatal incidents. Both victims required hospital treatment after losing consciousness and displaying telltale signs of opioid poisoning.

Wilhoite will serve at least 85% of her sentence, and faces three years of supervised release after getting out. Federal agents with the DEA and local cops with the Versailles Police Department teamed up on the investigation.
