James vs. Trump: Lawsuit Launched Over Education Funding Cuts

New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched a groundbreaking lawsuit against the Trump administration, accusing it of attempting to cut billions in state education funding by blocking diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. The coalition of 18 attorneys general argues that these moves are both illegal and unconstitutional.

The legal battle centers on the April 3 certification demand from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) requiring states to affirm they won’t engage in undefined ‘illegal’ diversity practices. New York, among other states, refused to comply, citing its commitment to civil rights laws.

Attorney General James emphasized, “Every student has the right to learn in an inclusive environment.” She vowed to protect schools and vulnerable students from illegal attacks.

The Trump administration’s policy, which began with Executive Orders since January 20, targets programs believed to be illegal by the White House. The ED’s directive extended the certification deadline to April 24.

New York stands to lose over $3 billion in federal funding, crucial for supporting low-income students and special education services. The lawsuit highlights the impact on districts like Rochester and Buffalo, which rely heavily on federal funds for their revenue.

Attorney General James and her coalition assert that the administration has failed to define ‘illegal diversity practices,’ leaving schools in a precarious position. The lawsuit seeks to declare the certification demand unlawful and stop its implementation.
