New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for its illegal suspension of federal funds for the Hudson Tunnel Project, a critical piece of infrastructure that faces an immediate shutdown threat. The lawsuit, filed alongside New Jersey Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, seeks emergency relief to prevent the halt in construction set to begin February 6th.
The project, part of the Gateway Program, aims to revitalize Hudson River rail travel by repairing a century-old tunnel and constructing a new one. Its shutdown would imperil thousands of jobs across New York and New Jersey, as well as regional economy and transit services.
Despite billions in federal funding approval, including over $16 billion through various grants and loans, the U.S. Department of Transportation abruptly halted all funding on September 30th, citing unspecified issues. Despite certifications of full compliance, the DOT has refused to reinstate the funds, pushing the project towards a halt.
A shutdown would not only cost millions in investments but also threaten the project’s viability due to the need for continuous construction and specialized equipment. It would severely impact over 200,000 daily commuters who rely on the Hudson River crossing for essential travel.
Attorney General James emphasizes the national importance of this transit corridor and vows legal action to prevent a shutdown that could have devastating consequences.
New York and New Jersey are united in their pursuit of emergency relief, aiming to keep the Hudson Tunnel Project moving forward and protect the jobs and services it supports.
