New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed two lawsuits against the Trump administration, charging it with the unlawful suspension of two critical offshore wind projects. The stop-work orders issued to the Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind projects have been deemed arbitrary and unwarranted by AG James, who argues that these actions threaten jobs, New York City’s energy grid, and the state’s climate progress.
The DOI’s sudden directive to halt construction on both projects, citing unspecified national security concerns, has been met with fierce opposition. Attorney General James asserts that both projects have undergone thorough national security reviews and are now under construction, making the administration’s decision reckless and in violation of the law.
“New Yorkers deserve clean, reliable energy, good-paying jobs, and a government that follows the law,” AG James stated. “The Trump administration’s inexplicable attempt to shut down these permitted projects puts our workers, families, and climate goals at risk.”
Governor Kathy Hochul echoed the sentiment, noting that the federal government’s actions are not only illegal but also detrimental to New York’s energy independence and economic development. “These unlawful actions cannot stand,” Governor Hochul declared.
The Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind projects are crucial for New York State’s energy needs. Together, they will provide over 1,700 megawatts of power, accounting for approximately 10 percent of New York City and Long Island’s electricity requirements. The projects have already employed thousands of workers and invested billions in the local economy.
Attorney General James and Governor Hochul are urging the courts to intervene and block the administration’s stop-work orders, ensuring that New York can continue its path towards a clean energy future without interference from unlawful federal actions.
