New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced the successful conclusion of a community gun buyback event in Schenectady. The buyback, organized by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), New York State Police, and local law enforcement agencies, resulted in the collection of 367 firearms from the public.
Attorney General James emphasized the significance of this effort, stating, ‘Every gun taken off the streets of Schenectady today was a step in the right direction to keep New Yorkers safe.’ Since taking office in 2019, James has removed more than 9,500 guns from New York state.
According to officials, the buyback event yielded 147 assault weapons, 92 handguns, and 65 long guns. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to combat gun violence and enhance public safety in New York communities.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James praised the collaboration, saying, ‘Gun buyback programs can prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands and are a compliment to our overall strategy to reduce gun violence.’
Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy expressed his support for the initiative, noting, ‘This gun buyback is a safe and approachable way to remove unwanted weapons from the community. I am pleased that our city was able to support the Attorney General’s Office and local law enforcement in this effort.’
Assemblymember Angelo Santabarbara highlighted the importance of these programs for public safety, stating, ‘These programs help reduce the risk of accidents, theft, or misuse, especially in homes with children or vulnerable individuals. It’s a practical approach to public safety, and it allows people to take meaningful action on their own terms.’
