Chiropractor Timothy Guthman Indicted for Auto Insurance Fraud

Inver Grove Heights, MN – The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota announced today that Timothy Wayne Guthman, a licensed chiropractor from Inver Grove Heights, has been indicted on federal charges of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and mail fraud.

Guthman, 43, is accused of orchestrating a scheme from 2012 to 2015 that defrauded automobile insurance companies through fraudulent no-fault insurance claims. The claims were submitted for services either deemed unnecessary or never rendered, with the intent of maximizing reimbursements from patients’ auto insurance companies.

According to the indictment, Guthman paid illegal kickback payments to ‘runners’ who brought patients to his clinics. These payments ranged from $500 to $1,500 per patient, and were often refunded if the patient failed to attend a certain number of treatment sessions. The runners also paid illegal kickbacks to patients to encourage return visits.

The investigation into Guthman’s activities was conducted by the Minnesota Department of Commerce Fraud Bureau and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorneys John E. Kokkinen and David M. Maria are prosecuting the case.

Defendant Timothy Wayne Guthman, 43, faces one count each of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and mail fraud.

The charges contained in the indictment are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
