GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A 44-year-old Brownsville, Texas man has been handed down a federal conviction for his role in a massive cocaine smuggling operation. Luis Alberto Cisneros, 44, admitted to possessing over 14 kilograms of cocaine with the intent to distribute.
Cisneros was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol on December 9, 2016, after agents at the Sarita checkpoint detected the presence of drugs. A canine sniffed out the contraband, leading to a thorough inspection that uncovered bundles concealed in the vehicle’s rear axle.
The defendant confessed during today’s hearing that he was fully aware of the drug-laden nature of his vehicle and had planned to deliver the cocaine to the Houston area for substantial compensation. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and U.S. Border Patrol collaborated on the investigation that led to Cisneros’ arrest.
U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos has scheduled sentencing for June 8, 2017, at which time Cisneros faces a minimum of ten years in federal prison, potentially up to life, and a fine of $10 million.
