Slobo Maric, Citizenship Fraud, Florida 2024

JACKSONVILLE, FL – The grimy halls of justice were again under the spotlight as Slobo Maric (56), a former Bosnian Army prison guard, was sentenced today to 18 months in federal prison for fraudulently obtaining U.S. citizenship. Maric had concealed his past role and crimes committed during the Bosnian Conflict in the 1990s.

U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard of the Middle District of Florida did not mince words, ordering Maric’s U.S. citizenship revoked as well. This comes after Maric pleaded guilty on July 18, 2016, to one count of unlawful procurement of naturalization.

The plea agreement revealed a dark chapter from Maric’s past. In 1993, he served as a shift leader in a Bosnian detention facility where he not only allowed but actively participated in the abuse and mistreatment of captured soldiers. He was even charged by the Bosnian government for his criminal conduct, later convicted in absentia for war crimes against prisoners.

Despite knowing about these charges, Maric chose to lie on his U.S. citizenship application, becoming a naturalized citizen on October 31, 2002. The investigation into Maric’s deception was led by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Jacksonville Field Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Dale Campion of the Middle District of Florida and Trial Attorneys Clayton O’Connor and David Rich from the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section (HRSP) brought Maric’s deceitful game to an end.
