10 Years for Reidsville Gunman

⏱ 2 min read

GREENSBORO, NC – Lindsey Hayes, 41, of Reidsville, is headed to federal prison for a decade after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition. The sentence, handed down by Chief/Senior U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles, also includes three years of supervised release.

The bust stems from a January 7th incident at an apartment complex on Marcellus Street in Reidsville. Cops responded to 911 calls reporting shots fired. Tenants told police they heard a loud argument before gunfire erupted. One resident said Hayes was heard yelling threats – “Watch this!” and “Open this door before I shoot this shit up!” – before the shooting.

Surveillance video paints a chilling picture. Hayes pulled up in a white SUV, marched to the apartment of the mother of his child, and started banging on the door, shouting. When she didn’t answer, he returned to his vehicle, then came back armed with a handgun. He even used the gun’s handle to repeatedly knock on the door.

After a tense standoff, Hayes got back in his SUV, but didn’t leave. As he slowly drove past the apartment, he extended his left arm out the driver’s side window and unleashed a barrage of shots. Muzzle flash and smoke were clearly visible on the footage.

Federal prosecutors didn’t detail if anyone was injured, but Hayes’ prior felony conviction meant simply having the ammo was enough to land him in a serious bind. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of North Carolina.
