15 Busted in Arkansas Meth Trafficking Ring

Fort Smith, Arkansas — A sweeping federal and state crackdown has dismantled a major methamphetamine trafficking network operating across northern Arkansas and into Missouri and Oklahoma. Fifteen defendants were arrested in a coordinated roundup following a year-long investigation targeting the distribution of large quantities of meth across Boone, Baxter, Searcy, Newton, Benton, and Washington Counties. Eleven face federal charges; four were taken into custody on state charges. Three others — Juan Delacruz Albarran, Juan Ramirez Vargas, and Joseph Macormick Elder — were already in custody after prior federal arrests.

On October 5, 2016, a federal grand jury returned three separate indictments charging 19 individuals in the Harrison, Arkansas, and southern Missouri area with operating a large-scale drug trafficking conspiracy. The indictments, unsealed today, contain 37 counts, all tied to the distribution of methamphetamine. Authorities executed seven federal and four state search warrants in Arkansas, along with one federal warrant in Missouri, seizing drugs, cash, and critical evidence linking the operation’s hierarchy and distribution chains.

“Today’s arrests reflect our commitment to removing criminal organizations trafficking methamphetamine into our communities throughout Arkansas,” said L. Diane Upchurch, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Little Rock. “We must be diligent and wipe out these networks in Arkansas. We appreciate the efforts of our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, and the state and federal prosecutors who faithfully work to reduce overall crime and improve the quality of life for Arkansans.”

David Ethredge, Prosecuting Attorney for the Fourteenth Judicial District of Arkansas, praised the unprecedented collaboration: “I would like to thank the many law enforcement officers that worked so hard and so long on this investigation. By combining resources and working together, we were able to accomplish what none of us could have otherwise accomplished on our own.”

The federal defendants arrested today will appear before United States Magistrate Judge Mark Ford in the U.S. District Court in Fort Smith early next week. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brandon Carter for the Western District of Arkansas. The investigation was a joint effort involving the FBI, DEA, Arkansas State Police, 14th Judicial Drug Task Force, multiple county sheriffs, the Harrison and Springdale Police Departments, Arkansas National Guard, U.S. Marshals, Missouri and Oklahoma law enforcement, and the Grand River Dam Authority.

An indictment is merely an accusation. An arrest warrant represents a finding of probable cause. Every defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
