20-Year-Old Sentenced in St. Louis Carjacking Spree

ST. LOUIS, MO – The grim tale of Asean Mitchell’s carjacking spree has reached its conclusion as the 20-year-old St. Louis native was sentenced to 150 months in federal prison today. Mitchell, alongside accomplices Travion Brown and another individual, terrorized downtown St. Louis with a series of armed carjackings.

On November 20, 2016, Mitchell and Brown conducted their first heist at the intersection of North 11th Street and St. Charles Street. The duo approached a victim, who was forced out of his vehicle at gunpoint by Brown. Mitchell then took control of the car and disappeared into the city.

Two days later, the trio attempted another carjacking but narrowly escaped when the victim managed to drive off as the light turned green at 10th Street and Market Street.

The following day, their luck ran out. At Olive Street and 11th Street, Brown shot a driver in the head after attempting to steal his vehicle. Miraculously, the victim survived the attack.

Co-defendant Travion Brown was previously sentenced by U.S. District Judge Ronnie L. White to 300 months for his role in the crime spree. After Mitchell’s sentencing, U.S. Attorney Jeff Jensen expressed relief that no one lost their life in these incidents and emphasized the ongoing efforts to combat carjacking and other violent crimes.

The investigation was a joint effort by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Sayler Fleming leading the prosecution for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
