59 Brims Godfather Willie Evans Sentenced to 20 Years for Racketeering
NEW YORK, NY – In a major blow to the 59 Brims gang, former godfather Willie Evans was sentenced to 20 years in prison for racketeering offenses. Evans, 48, was found guilty of overseeing the gang’s day-to-day operations and supervising its most violent and dangerous crimes.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams praised the sentence, saying, “Willie Evans’s sentencing marks a pivotal moment in our ongoing battle against organized crime. While the 59 Brims and other gangs may still linger, they do so on borrowed time. With each conviction, their power weakens, and we will continue to dismantle these networks piece by piece until our streets are safe for all.”
According to court documents, the 59 Brims gang operated in and around Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn, New York. Members of the gang engaged in a series of violent disputes with rivals, including those within the 59 Brims who they deemed disloyal. During these disputes, members and associates of the gang committed multiple murders, shootings, robberies, and assaults against their rivals and fellow members.
The gang was also responsible for selling heroin, fentanyl, crack cocaine, and marijuana, and committed or attempted to commit acts of violence to protect and expand their narcotics business. Among the crimes committed by the gang was the slashing of Jerlain Little, a former member of the 59 Brims who was kicked out of the gang, and the shooting of two rival gang members outside a bodega in the Bronx.
The case against Evans and the 59 Brims gang was one of the largest and most complex in recent history, with 22 defendants convicted and sentenced. Evans’s sentence marks a significant victory for law enforcement and a step towards dismantling the gang’s operations.
The 59 Brims gang’s violent activities and racketeering offenses have left a trail of destruction in their wake, and the sentence of Willie Evans is a major step towards holding accountable those responsible for these crimes.
In related news, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has announced that it will continue to pursue charges against remaining members of the 59 Brims gang, and to dismantle the gang’s networks piece by piece.
